Your Body Is Not Making It Up
If you are dealing with random heart palpitations, dizziness, acid reflux, throat tightness, bloating, anxiety, or brain fog—but your cardiac tests, bloodwork, or scans keep coming back normal—you may have heard:
“It’s just stress.”
“It’s anxiety.”
“It’s perimenopause.”
“It’s part of getting older.”
Those answers are not always wrong. Stress, anxiety, hormonal changes, and aging can all affect the body. But when those phrases are used to END the investigation or are provided AS the answer, they are incomplete.
Stress is not imaginary. Anxiety is not “all in your head.” Perimenopause is not the “root cause”. Each can create real, measurable changes in heart rate, breathing, digestion, sleep, muscle tension, and the way the brain interprets sensations.
The better question is: “Why does my body keep responding as though I am in danger?” Because that is what is happening. The body is living ad responding as if you are in constantdanger. This is where the autonomic nervous system—and the vagus nerve—deserve attention.
What Is the Vagus Nerve?
The vagus nerve is the tenth cranial nerve and one of the body’s major communication pathways between the brain and the internal organs. It begins in the brainstem, exits the skull through the jugular foramen, travels down the neck within the carotid sheath, and sends branches toward the throat, heart, lungs, esophagus, stomach, and much of the digestive tract.
It is an important part of the parasympathetic nervous system—the side often described as “rest and digest.” It helps influence heart rate and cardiac conduction, swallowing, voice, digestive signaling, and communication along the brain–gut axis. It also carries a tremendous amount of sensory information from inside the body back toward the brain.
But the vagus nerve does not work alone. Your brain, spinal cord, sympathetic nerves, hormones, immune system, blood vessels, breathing patterns, and sensory environment all participate in autonomic regulation. The vagus is an important part of the orchestra; it is not the entire orchestra.
What Happens When Fight-or-Flight Stays Turned On?
Fight-or-flight is not a flaw. It is a protective response designed to help you survive a threat. When danger is detected, the sympathetic nervous system and stress hormones help increase alertness, redirect energy, raise heart rate, change breathing, tighten muscles, and temporarily alter digestion. When the danger passes, the body should gradually return to a state in which it can rest, digest, repair, connect, and think clearly.
The problem begins when the threat response is activated again and again—or when the body never receives convincing signals that the danger has passed. This can happen with ongoing emotional stress, trauma, grief, chronic pain, poor sleep, sensory overload, illness, caregiving, unresolved conflict, financial pressure, old injuries, or years of believing you must remain strong no matter what you feel.
Over time, the nervous system can become less flexible. Instead of moving smoothly between activation and recovery, it may begin reacting to ordinary sensations as though they are warnings. This does not necessarily mean the vagus nerve is damaged or physically compressed. It can mean the balance between sympathetic activation and parasympathetic recovery has been disrupted.
How One Dysregulated System Can Create Symptoms Throughout the Body
When autonomic regulation is strained, symptoms can appear in several areas at once.
Heart palpitations
Adrenaline, sleep deprivation, dehydration, caffeine, hormonal fluctuations, medications, thyroid problems, anemia, changes in blood pressure, and abnormal heart rhythms can all cause or worsen palpitations. Autonomic activation may make the heart beat faster or make every beat feel louder and more alarming. The sensation can then frighten you, which releases more adrenaline and strengthens the cycle:
Sensation → fear → more activation → stronger sensation.
That does not mean the palpitation is “just anxiety.” It means a physical sensation and the nervous system’s threat response can amplify one another.
Dizziness or a floating sensation
Dizziness can be related to the inner ear, migraine, blood-pressure changes, dehydration, medication effects, anemia, blood sugar, autonomic disorders, breathing patterns, vision, or neck-related sensory input.
The upper neck contains joints and muscles that provide the brain with information about head position. Neck pain, muscle strain, or an old whiplash injury may alter that input in some people and contribute to cervicogenic dizziness.
Reflux, nausea, bloating, or digestive changes
The digestive tract is closely connected to the autonomic nervous system. Stress can affect gut sensation, movement, appetite, and the brain–gut conversation. Some people become constipated; others develop urgency, nausea, cramping, or increased awareness of bloating.
However, reflux should not automatically be labeled “vagal dysfunction.” Gastroesophageal reflux disease commonly involves the lower esophageal sphincter becoming weak or relaxing when it should not. Stress may aggravate symptoms, but structural, dietary, medication-related, and other medical factors still matter.
Throat tightness and shallow breathing
Threat changes the way many people breathe. The jaw tightens, the shoulders rise, and breathing shifts into the upper chest. The throat may feel constricted even when the airway is open. The vagus nerve contributes to sensation and movement in the throat and larynx, but the diaphragm is primarily controlled by the phrenic nerves—not the vagus nerve. Shallow breathing is therefore not proof that the vagus nerve is being pinched. It may reflect muscle bracing, pain, learned breathing patterns, respiratory illness, or ongoing autonomic arousal.
Brain fog and the feeling that you are not fully present
A brain focused on survival is not prioritizing creativity, memory, digestion, or complex decision-making. Poor sleep, hypervigilance, hormonal changes, pain, inflammation, medications, rapid breathing, depression, and many medical conditions can all contribute to cognitive fog.
When your nervous system is constantly scanning for the next threat, it makes sense that concentration becomes difficult. Your body may be spending its resources protecting you—not failing you.
Can Tight Neck Muscles Compress the Vagus Nerve?
This claim has become popular online, but the anatomy is more complicated than many posts suggest. The deep suboccipital muscles are located at the back of the upper neck. The vagus nerve exits the skull through the jugular foramen and then travels deeper in the neck within the carotid sheath. Based on that anatomy, ordinary tightness in the muscles at C1–C2 is not established as a common cause of direct vagus nerve compression.
True structural irritation or compression of the vagus nerve can occur, but it is uncommon and may involve surgery, a mass, inflammation, vascular structures, or another identifiable condition. It requires appropriate medical evaluation.
That does not mean the neck is irrelevant. Chronic neck pain can keep the brain receiving danger signals. Guarded posture can alter breathing. Jaw and shoulder tension can make the whole body feel braced. Abnormal cervical sensory input may contribute to dizziness in certain people. Gentle heat, massage, physical therapy, mobility work, or acupuncture may help some people with pain and tension.
What Does It Mean When Your Tests Are Normal?
Normal results are valuable. They may rule out specific dangerous conditions. They do not mean your symptoms are imaginary, and they do not always identify symptoms that come and go. A routine EKG, for example, records a short window of time. Recurrent dizziness may call for orthostatic blood-pressure and heart-rate measurements, medication review, vestibular assessment, or other testing. Palpitations and brain fog may warrant consideration of thyroid function, anemia, electrolytes, sleep, hormones, nutrition, and medications. The goal is not to choose between “medical” and “nervous system.” The nervous system is medical—and responsible care looks at both safety and the whole person.
Supporting a Nervous System That Has Forgotten How to Stand Down
There is no single “vagus reset,” that is ‘one and done’ and results in total healing is rarely about forcing the body to calm down. A body that has stayed alert for years may need repeated, believable experiences of safety.
Helpful practices may include:
- Slow, comfortable breathing. Try allowing the exhale to become slightly longer than the inhale without forcing a very deep breath. Stop if you feel lightheaded. (Ex: Inhale counting to 4, hold counting to 4, exhale counting to 8, hold counting to 4, and repeat)
- Gentle movement. Walking, stretching, and gradually rebuilding tolerance can help the body use stress energy and reconnect with the present environment.
- Reducing unnecessary muscle bracing. Scan your entire body, starting with the jaw, tongue, and moving through the shoulders, hands, abdomen, and feet. Letting one area soften may be more achievable than demanding that the whole body relax.
- Consistent sleep and wake rhythms. The nervous system responds to predictability.
- Regular nourishment and appropriate hydration. Long gaps without food, dehydration, and excess caffeine can mimic or intensify autonomic symptoms in some people. Individual medical restrictions still apply. Excessive processed sugar and carbs are excitatory and may counter relaxation.
- Safe sensory cues. Prayer, music, humming, warmth, time outdoors, familiar scents, weighted pressure, or the presence of a trusted person can help some bodies recognize safety.
- Addressing pain and old injuries. I encourage consistent Chiropractic care, or a qualified clinician or physical therapist can evaluate persistent neck pain, restricted movement, headaches, or dizziness instead of assuming every symptom is stress.
- Making room for the story beneath the symptoms. Trauma-informed counseling and other appropriate support may help when a person has spent years suppressing emotion, anticipating danger, or becoming whoever they needed to be to survive.
Avoid aggressive do-it-yourself neck manipulation and carotid massage.

One session may help someone notice that a different internal state is possible; lasting regulation usually requires repetition, attention to underlying causes, and appropriate medical care. The goal is not to convince your body that nothing happened, but to help it recognize that the threat is not happening right now.
Your Symptoms Are Real—and They Deserve More Than a Dismissal
You do not have to accept “it is just stress” as though stress is nothing. Stress changes physiology. Trauma can shape breathing, muscle tension, digestion, sleep, pain, and the body’s interpretation of everyday sensations.
You also deserve better than an online promise that one compressed nerve explains everything. Looking beyond means staying curious without abandoning safety. It means ruling out what is dangerous, recognizing patterns across the whole system, and asking what has kept the body on guard for so long.
Your body is actively protecting you with a response it has not yet learned how to turn off. With the right support, it may be possible to help it experience something different.
